Kuala Lumpur began life in 1857 at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers. The settlement started when a member of the Selangor royal family, Raja Abdullah, opened up the Klang Valley for tin prospectors. The commercial area of tin trading was located in the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers and it was here that Kuala Lumpur, meaning 'muddy estuary' in Malay, was born. At this site lies the Jamek Mosque, the only place in Kuala Lumpur where coconut trees still survive the onslaught of modernity. Its other main attractions are the Petronas Twin towers - the tallest twin towers in the world, KL Tower and Sultan Abdul Samad Building. From a shanty town, Kuala Lumpur has blossomed into Malaysia's Federal Capital, a city poised to compete with the ranks of world-class cities.
